Bonus: I did some playing around with Toucan renderer as well. I may just have this because I have a really old copy of Rhino for Mac (back when it was still beta). I found that the viewport renderer does not keep up with all the extra render options, and that a well-lit viewport can still result in a blown-out render. Occlusion seemed to change lighting, as well as the strength of each light source. Two sources (cone and point) were needed to keep unexpected results from happening. Light color is another indicator of light intensity.
